TELECOM EVENTS The ITU, in collaboration with its 184 Member Countries, is responsible for organizing the World Telecom exhibition and forum every four years and the regional TELECOMs every four years in each of the regions. TELECOM exhibitions and forums are organized by ITU's TELECOM Secretariat. The exhibitions are a showcase of the latest advances in telecommunication techniques, and publicize the possibilities of applying telecommunication science and technology. The Forums provide a privileged and unique meeting place for government leaders, administrations and top executives from operators, industry and service providers as well as users, investors, lawyers and the press. The WORLD TELECOMs offer a universal opportunity to view state-of-the-art technology concerning all aspects of telecommunication, and related fields of activities. The REGIONAL TELECOMs take place upon invitation of Member Administrations, and aim at bringing the potential benefits of telecommunications closer to the peoples of each continent by emphasizing the specific problems of each region and indicating possible solutions to them. These not-for-profit exhibitions and forums, organized by the ITU, are an excellent means of catering to the needs of both developed and developing countries and facilitate the transfer of technology and of information essential to developing countries. The next scheduled TELECOM event is TELECOM 95 at Geneva, Switzerland, 3 to 11 October 1995. It will include an exhibition, a forum, and a book fair. TELECOM 95 Exhibition TELECOM 95 will take place in Geneva at Palexpo and the theme is Connect!. For the first time, networking and multimedia companies will exhibit at a TELECOM exhibition in Geneva. The new hall at Palexpo will provide an additional 16,000 m2 gross, bringing the overall ground floor space to 86,500 m2 gross. However, space is sold out and as a result, TELECOM has been obliged to downsize the space allocations of many exhibitors and to establish a waiting list. TELECOM 95 Book Fair The original concept for Book Fair 95, the World Book Fair on Telecommunications and Electronics has been broadened and enhanced. The latest developments in publication methods, technologies, media and strategies will be displayed at Book Fair 95 in a central multimedia area which will provide both the exhibitors and the public with cutting edge hardware platforms and software applications. Under the leadership of ITU, symbolised by the Tree of Knowledge, publishers will find their contacts with the public facilitated by the new layout of the Fair. TELECOM 95 Forum While Forum 95 will build on the success of its predecessors, its structure has been modified in order to incorporate both the convergent nature of the evolving telecommunication/ computer industry environment and the on-going globalization of their respective markets. The format of its Sessions has been enhanced to enable interactive discussions between speakers and participants and thus to favour and encourage meaningful dialogue between top-level representatives from this enlarged industry and the public. Forum 95 will comprise two summits: the Strategies Summit and the Technology Summit. The Strategies Summit will deal with all general telecommunication policy, investment, development, economic, standardisation and regulatory aspects under the ambitious theme "Breaking down Barriers towards the Global Information Society". It will address the needs and expectations of the broad ITU membership, as well as the opportunities and requirements characterising the expanded communications market. The Technology Summit will provide an interactive arena for users, traditional telecommunication companies, computer and consumer electronics giants, broadcasting and cable television interests, as well as entertainment and software companies, focusing on the "Convergence of technologies, services and applications".
