NP/94-1 (Rev) 19 January 1994 ORIGINAL: French Items you may have missed in 1993 New member states Since 1 January 1993, the following nine new Members have joined the ITU : - Czech Republic (1 January 1993) - Georgia (7 January 1993) - Slovakia (23 February 1993) - Kazakhstan (23 February 1993) - Micronesia (18 March 1993) - The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (4 May 1993) - Turkmenistan (7 May 1993) - Eritrea (6 August 1993) - Andorra (12 November 1993). The ITU now has 182 Members. Introduction of new telephone codes The telephone service code for former Yugoslavia (38) changed on 1 October 1993. On that date, the following telephone codes came into service: - Yugoslavia 381 - Croatia 385 - Slovenia 386 - Bosnia and Herzegovina 387 - The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 389 Telephone links with the Vatican City State and the Republic of San Marino are now independent of the Italian network. The telephone code 378 came into effect for the Republic of San Marino on 26 October 1993. The date of introduction of the telephone code 379 for the Vatican City State has not been set. Regarding Monaco, the new code will gradually replace the country code 33 used so far. The change should be completed in late 1995 when France will be introducing a new numbering plan. As from 1 October 1993, the new telephone service code 291 assigned to Eritrea has been in service.
