IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW TELECOMMUNICATION CODES FOR ESTONIA, LATVIA, LITHUANIA AND MOLDOVA The telephone and data transmission codes of Estonia (372 and 248 respectively) will enter into effect on 1 March 1993 and their telex code (537) on 1 May 1993. Latvia has indicated that their telephone code (371) has been implemented as from 1 February 1993. Lithuania has implemented its telephone code (370) as from 15 February 1993 (except with countries of the former USSR) and Moldova has put into effect its telephone code (373) as from 15 January 1993 (except with Romania and the countries of the former USSR). For a complete list of telephone, telex and data transmission codes assigned to countries of the former USSR, please refer to Information Note to the press NP/92-1 of 30 September 1992. It should be noted that no calendar for implementing these codes has been set. Each country informs the ITU on the date of implementation after the necessary work is carried out on each network. 1 The ITU is an intergovernmental organization, within which the public and private sectors cooperate for the development of telecommunications and the harmonization of national telecommunication policies. The ITU adopts international regulations and treaties governing all terrestrial and space uses of the frequency spectrum as well as the use of the geostationary-satellite orbit, within which countries adopt their national legislation; it develops standards to ensure the interconnection of telecommunication systems on a worldwide scale regardless of the type of technology used; it also fosters the development of telecommunications in developing countries.
