تتطلب شبكات الاتصالات حداً أدنى من الصيانة الدورية المخططة للحد من خطر الخروج من الخدمة وضمان تلبية اتفاق مستوى الخدمة. وتصبح القضية أكثر حراجة بوجه خاص فيما يتعلق بالبنى التحتية المستندة إلى الألياف البصرية وما يقابلها من كمية هائلة من المعلومات المرسلة. إذ يمكن أن يكون هناك العديد من عناصر الشبكة التي تخضع للصيانة، على اختلاف مواضعها وأبعادها وعملها الميداني والمواعيد المحددة لصيانتها الدورية.
