Optical system design and engineering considerations

This Supplement provides information on the background and methodologies used in the development of optical interface Recommendations such as ITU-T Recs G.957, G.691, and G.959.1. This revision: clarifies BER measurements for FEC enabled systems; clarifies the mode partition noise penalty equation in 9.2.1.1; incorporates information on the statistics of the attenuation of installed links; adds guidance on best practices for Raman amplified systems to clause 14; makes other miscellaneous corrections.
