PP-14 Speeches

International Telecommunication Union

Malcolm Johnson
Deputy Secretary-General Elect

24 October 2014 - Acceptance Speech

I would like to thank the UK Government for its support to my candidature, especially British Ambassador Karen Pierce and her delegation.

I thank all Member States who voted for me for your trust in me.

I would like to thank my fellow candidates for their fair and professional campaigns. We certainly gave you some excitement!

Having such a qualified and diverse field of candidates is testament to our commitment to the Union and bodes well for its future. I hope we can rely upon their continuing participation in ITU and I look forward to working with them over the next 4 years.

I thank Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré and all my fellow elected officials over the last 8 years for their support and cooperation. It has been a privilege to have been a member of Hamadoun's management team over these years.

I thank all Member States, Sector Members, Associates, and Academia members who have supported the work of ITU-T over the last 8 years.

I thank the excellent ITU staff for their support and dedication to the Union.

Most of all I thank my wonderful wife Catherine for her tireless support, wise counsel and forbearance with my frequent absences from home on mission.

I have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Houlin Zhao over the last 8 years and I promise to give him the same tremendous level of support over the next 4 years that he has given Hamadoun over the last 8 years. Over the last 4 years I have also had an excellent relationship with Francois Rancy and Brahima Sanou and I look forward to continuing this for the next 4 years, as well as with the new TSB Director.

I am sure we will continue the success of the current team. Of course we will miss our current leader Hamadoun Touré but I am sure his spirit and presence will always be with us.

Thank you all again and I look forward to working with you all over the next 4 years.
