From 1997 to 1999 he was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Laboratoire d\u2019Etude des Transferts en Hydrologie et Environnement (LTHE) in Grenoble, France. From 2000 to 2001 he was a Research Associate in the Water Resources Program at Princeton University, USA. In 2001 he received a 5-year grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to set up a research team in Hydrometeorology, within the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University. In 2006 he became an Associate Professor and in 2007 he was appointed Full Professor and Chair of Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management at Wageningen University. In 2020 he moved to Delft University of Technology, where he is currently appointed as Professor of Hydrology &amp; Water Resources in the Water Management Department of the Civil Engineering and Geosciences Faculty. In 2014 he was recipient (shared with Dr. Aart Overeem and Dr. Hidde Leijnse) of the 24th bi-annual Professor Dr Vilho V\u00e4is\u00e4l\u00e4 Award of the World Meteorological Organization in recognition of the outstanding research paper entitled \u201cCountry-wide rainfall maps from cellular communication networks\u201d published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (110, 2741\u20132745).
