Session 1: Hispasat/Hispamar
Speaker: Mr. M. Panduro, Hispasat, Spain
Abstract
During last years, technology has been evolving up to offering to the citizens the possibility of
using new media to access to information, services and new opportunities through the so call
"Broadband Networks". Satellite technology has followed the same way and today satellite operators
enjoy of a mature technology that put us as an alternative solution to other telecommunication networks.
Satellite networks have evolved from the provisioning of pure broadcasting services to the modern
Multimedia Broadband Services. The citizens needs have increased faster than the networks installation,
today there exists demand of new services in areas where terrestrial infrastructure are not ready to
offer them, these are the "key satellite customers". Satellite services offer low investment in infrastructure,
fast network deployment as well as high data rates and user terminal cost at a market price.
HISPASAT is well suited over Spanish and Portuguese markets. Through its satellite fleet is providing IP
services from pure Access to Internet Backbone for ISP´s to Access to Internet for Residential users
making use of DVB standard technology. Services from 256 kbps to 2 Mbps in the forward Link and from
64 kbps to 2 Mbps in the return link allow to address services to a wide variety of customers: from
residential, prosumer up to corporate.
Additionally DVB-IP technology opens a new era of satellite services that requires the imagination and
innovation from the experts in the creation of new contents and applications that exploit the satellite
resources in the most interesting way. Telemedicine, tele-education and others satellite applications are
services that in the future will change the way of life of may people in the world. Satellite industry is
been able to adapt the technology to the real needs with no extra complexity. HISPASAT is compromised with
this task.
