Session 1: Satellite Based IP Broadband – Business Opportunities

Abstract
Satellite is an excellent candidate to provide broadband integrated Internet access due to its
characteristics such as global coverage, flexible bandwidth, and broadcast and multicast capabilities.
In this presentation business opportunities for broadband satellite IP networks meeting the future
applications such as content distribution, streaming media, and broadband access are described. The
current Loral Skynet solutions e.g., global network infrastructure, the integrated Skynet network,
ClearStream are described. Future two-way IP solutions with example are discussed. Various critical
factors for success of satellite IP networks, and standardization requirements are emphasized.
Biography
Dr. Robert Hedinger, Executive Vice-President at Loral Skynet, U.S.A, is responsible for corporate
strategy, Business and Product Development. He joined Bell Laboratories in 1978 as a Satellite Systems
Engineer responsible for Satellite System Design, Satellite Transmission Planning, and International
Technical Regulatory Matters. He led marketing and sales for AT&T SKYNET Satellite Services from 1991
to 1993. He led Business Development efforts since then for AT&T and subsequently for Loral after the
acquisition in 1997. Dr. Hedinger participated in ITU, (formerly CCIR) activities since 1980. He chaired
US delegation to CCIR Study Group 4 for three years and participated as a US delegate to three WRC's.
Participated as Vice Chairman of US Delegation to WARC ORB'88.
Dr. Hedinger received his PhD in Physics from The University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1975. |
