Abstract
Session 4 - COST-272- Packet-Oriented Service Delivery via Satellite
Speaker: Ms. E. Ferro, Vice Chairperson COST 272
COST is an initiative by the European Commission with the general objective to coordinate
nationally founded research at a European level (COST stands for Cooperation in the field
of Science and Technology). COST 272 addresses packet-oriented satellite communication systems.
The work includes the key requirements, the design of the system architecture, the specification
of protocols and the evaluation of system performance.
Biography
Erina Ferro received her Laurea degree with distinction in Computer Science from the University of
Pisa, Italy, in 1975.
Since 1976 Dr. Ferro was with CNUCE, an Institute of the Italian National Research Council (C.N.R.)
in Pisa. In the first half of 2002 CNUCE merged with another Institute of C.N.R., thus originating
the I.S.T.I. Institute (Information Science and Technology Institute "Alessandro Faedo"), where she
is currently employed as a senior researcher. Her main scientific interest field was and is the digital
transmissions via satellite. Working on this topic she participated to several international and national
projects where some systems designed by her team were implemented and used on the Eutelsat, Olympus and
Italsat satellites. Working in the TDMA satellite access schemes field she obtained two patents, in 1989
and 1996, respectively, together with other colleagues of her group. Currently, her main interest areas
are the satellite access schemes for multimedia traffic transmissions with guaranteed quality of service,
the fade countermeasure techniques, the call admission control policies for resource allocation, the
satellite systems’ performance analysis, the wireless LAN such as IEEE802.11 and their interconnection with
the satellite network. She is responsible of the wireless laboratory at ISTI.
She is reviewer for several international journals and congresses. She co-authored more than 80 papers
published on international journals and conference proceedings. |
