Abstract
The European Space Agency (ESA) with its R&D programme has been very active in promoting the use of satellite
communication for Internet traffic. In particular since the start of a specific programme line dedicated to
multimedia a number of pilot projects and developments have been carried out with the purpose of performing
trials in a real and a pre-commercial environment. The emphasis has been on scenarios based on the DVB technology
which is seen as key factor to the development of the satellite multimedia market. The programme of foreseen
activities includes the whole range of networking, terminals and on-board processing technologies which are deemed
necessary to ensure competitive provision of services.
Biography
Roberto Donadio is with ESA since 1989, first at the ESA Control Centre in Darmstadt, Germany and currently a
Senior Applications and Standardization engineer at the Research and Development Centre of ESA in Noordwijk,
The Netherlands. His main research interests include multicast protocols and the support of quality of service
on satellite networks. He has been actively involved in standardization matters in the ITU and ETSI and he
currently represents ESA in the DVB-RCS technical committee. |
