Session 3: IP and NGN projects in ITU-T

Abstract
This is a presentation of ITU Projects which are under responsibility of ITU-T
Study Group 13. Two Projects are described:
- The IP Project, which has the role to organise and to manage activities on IP
standardization in ITU and which consists of 13 study areas;
- The new NGN2004 Project which has just been launched by SG13 in November this year.
The Project description is presented : scope, fundamental characteristics, objectives,
capabilities and the list of its seven study areas for standardization activities.
Target dates for the first set of Recommendations on NGN is mid-2004, i.e. at the
end of the study period.
For the two Projects satellite issues are addressed in the presentation.
Biography
Jean-Yves Cochennec received his Master degree from the University of Brest (France) in 1971.
He joined France Telecom Research and Development (previously CNET) in 1972. In 1980 he started
working on asynchronous transfer techniques, specially on adaptation layers. Since 1990, he has
been active in ATM standardisation in ITU-T Study Group 13. He has also been active in the
standardisation of television transport in broadband networks in ITU-T SG 9, where he was Chair
of Working Party 2/9 (1997–2000).
He is now involved in studies on Next Generation Networks (NGN). Since 2000, he is Vice-Chair
of ITU-T SG 13 and Chair of WP1/13 in charge of coordination and management of SG 13 Projects.
