Closing remarks

This has been a very interesting workshop.
It has fully accomplished its objective in various dimensions:
- the variety of stakeholders present
- the number of countries represented
- the presentations helping understanding the current context Digital Signage and
- clear indication we have to aim at global, open standards, in cooperation with all stakeholders
Some areas that deserve further closer look from an international
standardization include:
- Terminology: Still important issue with terminology, as we saw from
presentations in JP, OVAB, INNES. Usually a sign of lack of underlying
standards as parties are trying to develop their own frameworks. Use of telco technology terminology x Internet/PC culture terminology. Interesting
contrast as many of the current large open DS service providers are telecom
operators. Without harmonization, there is a potential clash resulting in
misunderstanding and unnecessary duplication of work.
- Many digital signage products solutions and deployments have been
demonstrated.
Substantial industry investments progressing, e.g. Intel's architecture,
networked display technologies, solutions (e.g. NTT, KT).
But as far as I could see they were all vertically integrated within
proprietary architectures.
Standards based solutions would bring in a new dimension of interaction and
growth to this market, on a global scale.
- Different remote management approaches: SNMP, WS-Management, Intel's OPS
OOB
I believe ITU has a key role here, in virtue of its membership and of the
issues involved with Digital Signage, that go beyond just technologies, such
as privacy, security, and emergency services.
If we take what Youyoung LEE from KT said - Content is the king - then,
Global, open standards will be the King's most trusted advisor. |
