Abstract: Practical Issues in Managing Optical Networks

This paper discusses practical issues with respect to optical network management from a
network and service provider perspective. It discusses optical network services, optical
network transport architecture, and optical network deployment. Included in the discussion
of optical network transport architecture will be some discussion of the network management
DCN. Common concerns for network and service providers will be highlighted throughout the
discussion. Emphasis is placed on the need for migration strategies and integration strategies
for inter-working with existing environments.
