An appraisal of the Telecom Standard development process in Nigeria: Bashir Gwandu, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria

An overview of the telecom standardization process in Nigeria is provided. Skills gaps are identified, and ways of clothing the Gaps are proposed.
Survey of Standardization Capability of Developing Countries: Vijay Mauree, Programme Co-ordinator, TSB

This presentation will present the results of the study undertaken by ITU with the support of Korean government to assess the standardization capability of developing countries in particular. The presentation will also describe the National Standards Capability Scale (NSC) model and describe the primary standards gaps confronting developing countries at different stages on the NSC model and recommend some strategies for improving national standards capability.
Activities of ITU Regional Groups in African Region: Abossé. Akue-Kpapko, UMEOA

ITU-T standardization activities in Africa regions and its Benefits for African regulators and operators

The ITU-T is the standardization body in the domain of telecommunications. The results of its works are set annually as technical standards or recommendations.

In order to take into account the views of a large majority of member countries, regional groups have been built within some commissions to enhance the participation of those regions.

The presentation will dwell in length on topics of interest to African countries in the research commissions 2, 3, 5 and 12. It will come up with practical proposals to ensure a better participation of African countries in ITU meetings and will give some benefits that could come from the participation in these meetings.
Cloudy, with a chance for development: Johan Eksteen, Regional Standards Officer, Microsoft

This presentation will provide an overview of standardization in the cloud computing area and touch on other contributing areas of software engineering and information security. Links to current developmental issues and the emergence of the cloud phenomenon will be discussed and the role of policy and standards related to this promising aspect of cloud computing will be highlighted. A short introduction to a framework within which standards capacity building may be planned and executed is presented with examples linking the various topics introduced in the presentation.
Frequency bands, standards and future trends for mobile applications: Ilham. Ghazi, Radiocommunication Engineer, BR, ITU

The presentation will expose:
- Spectrum considerations for global mobile broadband access, i.e. the actual situation of the allocated frequency bands in Article 5 of the RR, concentrating on Region 1.
- The on-going discussions on future frequency bands needs and supplementary allocations (WRC-12), and further.
- The standards mobile broadband communications (ITU-R results and studies), which will expose the actual standards and future trends.
Conformity assessment and standards: Mohamed Chemani, Head of Standardization Department, ARPT

La présentation portera sur l’évaluation de la conformité et le rôle de l’UIT-T, du comité d’évaluation de la conformité CASCO de l’ISO et du Bureau d’évaluation de la conformité CAB de la CEI dans l’élaboration des procédures d’évaluation de la conformité.

Nous aborderons aussi, l’élaboration des normes dans le domaine des TIC par le comité technique mixte JTC1 et le Bureau de normalisation des télécommunications TSB.

Il est présenté également l’expérience Algérienne en matière d’agrément des équipements terminaux de télécommunications et installations radioélectriques.

This presentation provides advice and training that will contribute to the effectiveness of new standards representatives before, during and after international standards meetings. It contrasts the roles and actions of participants and group chairmen, and it concludes with a section on concrete measures that can be taken by developing countries to achieve their international standardization goals.
Technology Watch
Vijay Mauree, Programme Co-ordinator, TSB, ITU

This presentation will present the Technology Watch function at ITU-T and its strategic importance towards indentifying new standardization related work for ITU-T study Groups. The presentation will also include information about how universities and research bodies can also contribute to authoring Technology Watch reports.
