定向是一种用于线路信号调整以便减少串音电平、改善性能的传输方法，改善的程度取决于信道的特性，定向可能会对单一用户或者多个用户有利，ITU-T G.993.5建议书的范围明确地限于下行和上行方向的自我-FEXT（远端串音）抵消，该建议书定义了一种自我-FEXT抵消的方法，在该方法中，FEXT由一组近端收发器产生，消除该收发器组对远端发收器的干扰，这种抵消发生在VDSL2收发器之间，不一定是相同的剖面。该建议书打算与ITU-T G.993.2建议书一起实施。
