ITU-T creates new Full Service – VDSL Focus Group
ITU-T has agreed to establish a new Full Service – VDSL (FS-VDSL) Focus Group under its Study
Group 16 "Multimedia Services Systems and Terminals".
Following the initiatives taken by ITU-T to develop closer cooperation with external Forums and Consortia,
the FS-VDSL Committee requested ITU-T to establish such a Focus Group to enable its specifications to be
migrated to ITU-T.
The FS-VDSL Committee, a not-for-profit organization, was established nearly two years ago to define
specifications for a multi-service video-centric service platform based upon VDSL access technology.
It is made up of over 70 companies including operators, service providers, and equipment vendors.
At the recent meeting of the FS-VDSL Committee in Oslo, Norway, the committee agreed to make public the
first release of their specifications, and that these specifications would now be developed and
maintained by the ITU-T FS-VDSL Focus Group. The specifications define the architecture and provision
of high-quality video, data and voice services which can be delivered over traditional phone lines, providing
capabilities exceeding those of competing cable networks.
The FS-VDSL specifications were publicly released on 5 June to coincide with SUPERCOMM 2002 in Atlanta, USA.
The FS-VDSL press release announcing their release and the migration to the Focus Group can be found at:
http://www.fs-vdsl.net/press/index.html
The first meeting of the Focus Group is planned for 4-6 September 2002, in San Francisco. More information
on the ITU-T FS-VDSL Focus Group can be found at: http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/studygroups/com16/fs-vdsl
Creation of the Focus Group was approved by a Focus Group Review Committee and will be formally approved
at the next meeting of Study Group 16 in October 2002.
