Tools and ResourcesNetwork operators and regulators need tools and resources to assist them in their planning and decision making. There are many network planning tools available. ITU-D provides a significant radio deployment support capability. A significant amount of information is available in the presentations that have been provided in workshops, seminars, etc., organized by the ITU-D, usually in conjunction with local authorities and industry. These events addressed a range of topics relevant to IMT. The program and presentations for these events may be accessed by clicking here. ITU-T also conducts workshops and seminars, many of which are relevant to IMT. The programs and presentations may be accessed here. This page indicates upcoming events and has hyperlinks to past workshops. The information for each event includes the program and access to the presentations. In particular, the reader is encouraged to look for the five events labelled “Regional Development Forum” which were jointly handled by ITU-D and ITU-T. A review of the presentations in the various IMT seminars, workshops and fora that have been given over the hears will identify candidate planning tools, both in house within ITU and commercial. There are also a number of commercial resources which can be purchased to obtain information on specific deployments and licensing. For more information, click on: - ITU-D’s Spectrum Management System for Developing Countries: SMS4DC - AT4 Wireless offers spectrum database support. e.g., for the WiMAX Forum - The Telecommunications Management Group, Inc. provides a commercial report on “3G Licensing Around the World: Country Data Sets”
Within ITU-D, a number of other resources and documents are available to assist in gaining a more complete understanding of mobile telecommunications. Two reports in particular are available and provide substantial useful information and context. These are:
- “Mobile Web: State of the Market, Technology, and Business Issues”, by Ahmed Abdelsalam of Mind Commerce. This April 2008 report provides a comprehensive overview of the subject indicated by its title and would be very useful to anyone wishing to gain a better understanding not only of mobility and the internet, but also what the realities are with regard to devices, deployment and related topics. Information on this report may be viewed here. Access to the ITU-BDT’s copy of this report may be obtained [here.]
- “The Next Billion: How Emerging Markets Are Shaping the Mobile Industry” is an October 2007 report by Pyramid Research which provides very useful insight into such aspects about the next billion users as where they live, what they earn and spend, what they want and need, the impact on operators, and the impact on handset and infrastructure suppliers. Information on this report may be viewed here. Access to the ITU-BDT’s copy of this report may be obtained [here.] |
