Workshop on telephone services costs and tariffs calculation
for English speaking West African countries
_______

Banjul, The Gambia 25 - 29 April 2000

Background

As the telecommunication business is getting more and more opened to competition, the cost and tariff issue is moving to the heart of the market strategies of the telecommunication service providers, especially the network operators.

Those are simultaneously submitted to the constraint of an existing network in which very recent and significant investments have been consented, and, to the challenge of a rapidly changing telecommunication business model driven by the global trend of the new technologies.

The ITU have been working hard to increase the awareness of the operators, especially those in developing countries.

Through the Resolution 26 of the WTSC96 (Geneva, 1996), the BDT have extended his support to the Regional Tariff Groups.

The BDT is impressed by the work done during the last few months: the TAS model is under revision, the TAL Group have adopted his model, and the TAF Group will adopt his own model on March 9, 2000.

Although proud for having participated in building that success, the BDT is conscious that defining the concepts and formulas of model is important, but that it is far more important to respond to the countries need to use those model to calculate their costs and their tariffs.

After the adoption of the TAF model, the West African English speaking countries will be the first to meet in workshop for real and practical calculations of their telecommunication services costs and tariffs, with the full support of the BDT.

Under the "Action 3024" of the Operational Plan of 2000, the Africa Field Office of Dakar have obtained the agreement of the Gambia (Gamtel Co) to host this event in April 2000, form 25 to 29.
