ITU works to keep tech safe, close new digital divides, and unlock quantum for good.    <\/h3>\n                        <p>\n        <strong>Quantum technologies are rapidly advancing.<\/strong> While classical computers process information in bits, quantum technologies harness quantum mechanics principles to approach complex problems in new ways. With their power to boost AI pattern recognition and machine learning, they are set to revolutionize societies.\u00a0<br><br>Quantum technologies have the potential to:    <\/p>\n                    <div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>optimize industrial processes and supply chains,<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>improve sustainable energy grids and smart cities, <\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>better predict diseases, <\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>boost telemedicine, <\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>advance weather forecasts and climate models, and <\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<li>help the space industry coordinate its explosive growth in satellites. <br><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>                        <p>\n        As these technologies mature, they also bring significant challenges, such as daunting new cybersecurity threats. With 2025 as a symbolic rallying point, ITU builds on partnerships between governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society to shape quantum initiatives in a positive way.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<p>ITU has expanded its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aiforgood.itu.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI for Good<\/a><\/strong> platform to include <strong>Quantum for Good<\/strong>, bringing together global experts to explore quantum-powered solutions for sustainable development.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"ituContainer\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3ba38639568e7b28b53c23588f79dad7\"><em>\u201cWe have barely scratched the surface of what quantum technologies can do. These technologies can help fix the world\u2019s biggest problems, from connectivity gaps to poverty and inequality to the climate crisis. While quantum computing threatens to break current encryption methods, quantum communications offer new security solutions. This makes developing cybersecurity strategies and standards a critical priority.<br><br><strong>Promoting existing standards to shape quantum for good is an essential step<\/strong>. Equally important is to continue developing new standards.<br><br>ITU&#8217;s standardization work addresses both immediate and long-term security needs, to help everyone prepare for the quantum future. Since the first Recommendation in 2019 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/rec\/T-REC-Y.3800\/\">ITU-T Recommendation Y.3800<\/a> \u2013 set a baseline for quantum technology use, ITU study groups have been developing security and global interoperability standards\u00a0for quantum communications.<br><br>ITU\u2019s initial focus has been on Quantum Key Distribution for quantum-safe encryption and authentication, <strong>involving over 300 experts from 180 organizations and 43 countries<\/strong>. Today, only a handful of countries are making substantial investments in quantum research and development, creating the risk of a new technological divide.<br><br><strong>The quantum readiness gap extends beyond financial resources. <\/strong>It encompasses technical expertise, research infrastructure and educational capacity.
