ITU’s role as creator of the world’s most universally-recognized infocommunications standards dates back as far as the organization itself. Since 1865 ITU has been brokering industry consensus on the technologies and services that form the backbone of the world’s largest, most interconnected man-made system, covering everything from core network functionality and broadband to next-generation services like IPTV.
The Recommendations from ITU´s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) are defining elements in information and communication technologies (ICTs) infrastructure. ITU-T Study-Group 5 is the leading global standardization activity dealing with the reducing the carbon footprint of ICTs, as well as with identifying ways in which ICTs can be used to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from other sectors.
One of the key recommendations produced by this group is the series of the recommendations ITU-T L.1400, which define a set of methodologies that will specify principles, concepts, requirements and methods for quantifying, reporting and verifying GHG emissions and removals of ICT. It will also include the design, development and management of a GHG inventory related to ICT. It will specifically meet the scopes defined for:
• GHG inventory design and development
• GHG inventory components
• GHG inventory quality management
• GHG accounting result reporting
• Organization's role in verification activities
• Environmental impact of ICT goods
