Telefónica del Perú, provider of fixed and mobile communications in Peru, launched the Llaqt@red project to integrate the country's rural areas and provide better access to the information society and international markets. Internet connection is established by means of VSAT satellite terminals connected to indoor public telephones. Public booths provide flat-rate Internet access, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
This project is supplemented by initiatives by the Telefónica Foundation, a not-for-profit part of the Telefónica Group that works for social and cultural development. The Telefónica Foundation gives priority to disabled persons when selecting managers for public telephone facilities and provides special equipment where there is a high proportion of disabled users.
In 2004, the Llaqt@red project was recognized as an outstanding project in the "public services" category of "Corporate Creativity in Peru".
Value : USD 170’000 (around USD 10’000 each for 17 centres)
Expected outcome : The project is designed to be a self-sustaining means of bridging the digital divide. As well as using the Internet as a vehicle for fostering local culture and folklore, it will serve as an important educational resource. At the same time, it will help boost the local economy through promotion of local products and tourism.
