The aim of the rural village phone project is to provide rural communities with valuable communications services through mobile phones to enable them to start self-sustaining businesses. With the help of microfinance individuals living in rural areas can become “village phone operators” and provide communications services to their communities. The project is instrumental in increasing local economic activity and business opportunities.
Village Phone Program is a collaborative effort to bring telecommunication access to rural villages in Uganda and Rwanda. In order to achieve full network coverage in rural villages of Uganda and Rwanda
Nokia and GFUSA have jointly developed a solution based on Nokia’s entry-level phones and an external antenna to serve rural communities in these countries.
As part of the cooperation, Nokia and GFUSA, will conduct a study. The intent of the study is to measure the effects of the mobile telecommunications on community development and individual business integration as well as to evaluate micro credit as a sustainable tool to remove the initial cash barrier.
