Activity description: The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) was established in 1989 for the purpose of facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. APEC members represent forty-six percent of the world trade, fifty-seven percent of the global GDP and forty-five percent of the global population from 21 member economies. And the APEC Ministers of the member economies, at the Sixteenth APEC Ministerial Meeting in Santiago, Chile, November 2004, recognized: “… the importance of the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), to be held in Tunisia in November of 2005, for continuous development of the global information society, and instructed Senior Officials … to formulate APEC’s input to the WSIS.” Following the APEC’s Regional Information Society: A Contribution to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS/PC-3/CONTR/137-E) for the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), APEC welcomes this opportunity to contribute to the second phase of WSIS.
