Activity description: The Development Gateway Award 2005, formerly known as the Petersberg Prize, recognizes outstanding achievement in the application of ICT to improve lives in developing countries. The purpose of the $100,000 award is to raise awareness of the impact of ICT, highlight successful initiatives so that they may be replicated, and help scale up the success of our prize winners. Criteria include scale of impact and sustainability of the initiative. The 2005 winner was the eChoupal program of ITC, Ltd., in India, which has improved the incomes of millions of farmers through access to information about markets and productivity at thousands of village kiosks. When eChoupal was pronounced the winner, ITC, Ltd. matched the $100,000 to establish a new educational component to the eChoupal model. Five other worthy finalists are also profiled on our website. In 2004 the winner was Grameen Bank's Village Phone in Bangladesh.
