The activity covers energy resources and use; water resources and use; population; social indicators; gender; trade; national accounts; labor; health and vital statistics; transport; finance; and information and communication technology. It aims to bring the disparate databases, spreadsheets and other information repositories into a single organizational database with a flexibly modifiable structure. Enhancing the ability of ESCWA to produce and distribute reliable statistics on multi-sectoral indicators from the database to help policy makers and decision makers in the region is an important consideration for this activity. The ESIS functions as a dedicated software component on the desktop and will facilitate the distribution of indicators in sectoral functional areas to policy makers in the region through its Web component. As statistics underpin policies, this is expected to have positive effect on policymaking in the ESCWA region, in particular, with regards to policies that promote regional cooperation.
