The Regional Profile of the information society in Western Asia (E/ESCWA/ICTD/2005/5, English/Arabic) addressed major issues related to building the information society, such as: (1) National and sectoral strategy formulation in the ESCWA regional and the implementation of plans of action; (2) Infrastructure, ICT sector building and capacity building, with special attention to availability, affordability and quality of services, ICT dissemination in rural and urban areas, and strategic public-private partnerships; (3) Enabling environment, at the legal and regulatory levels, for ICT use and promotion of an ICT productive sector; (4) Main applications influencing the socioeconomic development in ESCWA region such as e-government, e-business, e-learning and e-health; and (5) digital Arabic content.
