Cyber-Volunteers is a new program that offers a concrete contribution to an information society accessible to all. The program offers volunteer internships, generally for a period of several weeks or months, destined to specialists in the field of information and communication technologies, be it in the field of the web, system administration or software development. Interns first receive training to prepare them for a more extensive field experience as cyber-volunteers. They then focus on a particular project, where for instance they might help connect a city hall, develop a web site for an NGO or train people who have little knowledge in the field of information technologies.
The Cyber-Volunteers program not only focuses on North-South cooperation, but even more so on South-South and South-North cooperation. In this way, a young citizen from Burkina Faso can for example become a cyber-volunteer in Mali, Switzerland or Cameroon. As to the internships planned at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research), through ISF (Informaticiens sans frontières), they offer the possibility to volunteers from the South to directly get involved in projects such as the African GRID, a project that aims to share the 'Central Processing Unit' (CPU) and information resources among universities and research centers from around the world, through the net.
