The awards, presented at a ceremony in Manama, Bahrain on May 17, 2011, are a part of the 2011 World Summit Awards, which recognize innovative and creative e-content around the globe. The Arabic e-Content Awards are specifically for e-content and new media applications in the Arab region. ictQATAR, the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology, led a National Nominating Committee for the 2011 World Summit Award (WSA), where an extensive review of various Qatari websites was undertaken to nominate the most outstanding websites in the eight categories of the award: e-Government & Institutions, e-Business & Commerce, e-Culture & Heritage, e-Entertainment & Games, e-Health & Environment, e-Inclusion & Participation, e-Learning & Education and e-Science & Technology. “We are proud that two websites from Qatar received such prestigious recognition and we hope it serves as encouragement for more people in Qatar to develop innovative e-content and web applications, ” said Reem Al-Mansoori, ictQATAR’s ICT Skills Development Manager who led the National Nominating Committee. “Over 75 organizations l and individuals from Qatar submitted nominations for the award, all of which were extensively evaluated based on the WSA guidelines, including quality and comprehensiveness of content, ease of use, value added through interactivity and multimedia, quality of design and web accessibility as per W3C standards”. In winning the Arab e-Content award in the “e-Government and Institutions” category, Hukoomi (www.gov.qa), Qatar’s e-government portal, was recognized for its quality of e-content, the level of usability on the portal and the strides the portal is making towards providing a one-stop shop for e-government services online. “We feel delighted and honored to have won the Arab e-Content Award,” said Hassan Al-Sayed, ictQATAR’s Assistant Secretary General. “Since its re-launch in 2010 with a completely new design and layout, we’ve been continuously working to establish Hukoomi as a convenient and reliable source for government e-services and information. Winning this award marks our commitment to making government more transparent and accessible for all.” In the “e-Learning and Education” category, Al-Jazeera Children’s Taalam.TV (www.taalam.tv) was recognized for its simple, rich and diverse audio and video educational content, aimed at primary and preparatory Arab students in the region. Launched in 2010, the website displays Arabic curriculum and educational videos, which were creatively produced by Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC).
