SURINAME RURAL TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK EXPANSION AND ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME |
| Activity description: | The government of the Republic of Suriname has included in its policy statement 2000-2005 the further opening up of the interior of Suriname. In the policy statement 2005-2010 this was again stated and it is still a priority of the Government of Suriname to take all measures necessary to improve the conditions of the indigenous and maroon communities who still have a disadvantage compared to the people living in the coastal area of Suriname. In order to stimulate the social and economic development of the interior Telesur, the government owned Telecommunication Operator of Suriname, has developed the Suriname rural Telecommunication network expansion and enhancement programm. This program, which has the full support of the Government of the republic of Suriname has been divided into 4 phases with the main objective to arrive at improved telecommunication services within the rural area. In order to cover the whole of Suriname Telesur will add a network of 14 VSATs (Very Small Aperture Technology) to the existing telecommunication infrastructure. The plan is to implement Multi-purpose community Telecentres (MCT) in the villages providing the villagers with voice as well as data (internet) capabilities. Several centres have already been established. On the basis of the above the rural area may be demarcated as follows: 1. The Sipaliwini District; 2. The Brokopondo district 3. The areas outside of Paramaribo and Value : 660,310,000 USD Expected outcome The overall objectives for realizing telecommunication in the rural area are - the establishment of integrated, independent rural economies. - to arrive at improved telecommunication services in general - in particular to facilitate increased investments in the interior of Suriname - to increase accessibility of social services, i.e. telehealth and educational services. - to stimulate the development of ecotourism. - to facilitate increased access to cultural heritage information. |
