Navajo Nation ICT Based on IndegenousTraditions Project |
| Activity description: | The Navajo Nation covers about 27,000 square miles. It is the largest sovereign land within the boundaries of the United States. However it is a very remote land. The Navajo Nation government is a 3 branch democracy modeled after the US Federal Government. Within our Nation we have 110 communities. Only a few years ago, when we started our satellite and wireless technology project, only 22% of our people had telephones, 15% had computers and only 10% had access to the Internet. Unemployment was around 50%. These statistics amaze others we talk to outside the United States, however they were real. During the past 3 years, all that has changed. We have used satellite and wireless communications to connect all our community centers, other facilities and even many homes. These community centers that we call Chapters are where our people come for free access to computers and the Internet. Everywhere across our lands people are using this technology to take distance education classes, communicate with family and friends. Many of our people are developing new e-commerce opportunities. These opportunities are creating new jobs for our people. It is my opinion that even though everyone should embrace ICT, it will not truly happen until the people also can relate these tools to the deep values of their own culture. Value : $20,000,000 US plus Expected outcome : We believe everyone should embrace ICT, however, it will not truly happen until people also can relate these tools to the deep values of their own culture. If we do not relate ICT to our cultures, ICT will become another solution in search of a problem. We are using ICT to bring Education, Health, Opportunity, E-Goverment and Security to our people and we plan to share our knowledge with other Indegenous people The list of beneficiary countries includes Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Rep., Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico,Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, United States Virgin Islands, Uruguay, Venezuela |
