| Activity description: | The panel included two presentations: Yuri Hohlov (IIS) - Information Society Development in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia; Yuri Misnikov (UNDP Bratislava) - Regional cooperation for better information society policy impacts: The case of eSEE Agenda Initiative in the Western Balkans. Over 30 participants from Europe and Central Asia joined the meeting. The meeting covered the following problems: national e-strategies and action plans comparison for the region; analysis and evaluation of Eastern European and Central Asian countries readiness for the Information Society; elaboration of tools and methods for Information Society monitoring in the region and some countries taken individually; coordination of activity and strengthening of partnership of different development-driven communities on regional level; forming Information Society development partnerships in Eastern Europe and Central Asia on the regional level as well as each country individually. Tunis Commitment, para 86, supports regional and international integration efforts aimed at building a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society, and reiterates that strong cooperation within and among regions is indispensable to support knowledge-sharing. It says that regional cooperation should contribute to national capacity-building and to the development of regional implementation strategies. Para 88 reaffirms that through the international cooperation … it will be possible to succeed in the challenge of harnessing the potential of ICTs as a tool, at the service of development, to promote the use of information and knowledge to achieve the internationally-agreed development goals and objectives, including the Millennium Development Goals, as well as to address the national and local development priorities, thereby further improving the socio- economic development of all human beings.
