| Activity description: | For the fulfilment of this task the following activities will be carried out during the project: The objects of cultural heritage will be digitised and the data bank of digitised information will be created; Conditions will be created for the provision of e-services to users on the basis of accumulated data bank. The objects of cultural heritage for digitisation will be selected according to the criteria provided in the Conceptual Framework of Lithuanian Cultural Heritage Digitisation. The following criteria have been named as the principal ones: the historical period of document publication or compilation, document language, rarity and uniqueness (the number of extant copies), document content, scientific value and physical state. The selection of each individual document, group of documents or the whole collection for digitisation will depend on several criteria. Digitised objects of cultural heritage will be collected and stored on the central server of NLL. Moreover, the project partners also intend to place digital objects on their servers at the same time guaranteeing the submission of these documents onto the central server of Martynas Mavydas National Library of Lithuania. Digitised cultural heritage will be accessed via LIBIS portal. After the implementation of the project the data bank of e-resources of libraries, archives and museums will be created containing over 3.605 million digitised pages of original manuscripts, newspaper, old books, registers and other important document of great historical value. Virtual services will be available free of charge to Lithuanian and foreign users; thus, all users will have equal possibilities and there will be no necessity of visiting museums, archives and libraries in order to get acquainted with the documents of exceptional value since they will be available via the virtual library. This point is especially relevant to the handicapped because they will be able to learn, to find documents from libraries, museums and archives and to obtain professional development at home due to the access to the virtual information system. Our main target is to make Lithuanian cultural heritage available to Lithuanian and foreign users in order to maintain individaulity of open society. This project has been submitted to the Golden Book database. |
