Given the maturing of social networking, combined with the power of computing devices and reduced costs of our communications networks, we now see clearly that our individual information is collected and used, with or without our knowing consent. Issues as complex as this require very careful consideration from all impacted stakeholders. There is a growing body of evidence that indicates some societal benefits have been achieved by harnessing Big Data. On top of this in a global digital community, we need to be clear about whose rules apply to whom. The balance must be understood. What should stakeholders such as regulators and legislators do differently?
