Professor Reg Coutts career of over 35 years in the telecommunications industry after completion of his PhD in communications engineering in 1976 spans over 35 years beginning in the then research labs of the incumbent telco Telstra and involved in the early developments of 3G mobile technology with the ITU.
Reg moved at the end of the 80’s to an executive management role in the new mobiles division as the national manager strategy. In 1993 Reg took up the inaugural chair in telecommunications at the University of Adelaide until leaving to form his own company Coutts Communications www.couttscommunications.com where he has continued to influence the industry.
In addition to consulting, in 2006 Reg founded a startup company Red Button Technologies http://www.redbutton.com.au which has a number of patens. In 2008 Reg was appointed a member of the Government’s Expert Panel on the National Broadband Network (NBN) that is being implemented. In October 2010 Professor Coutts was appointed to the Government Media and Communications regulator the ACMA www.acma.gov.au for a 5 year term.
Currently Reg Coutts is an Emeritus Professor of Telecommunications of the University of Adelaide, consults through Coutts Communications www.couttscommunications.com and is a Member (part time) of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), Chairman of the Telecommunications Association (TelSoc http://telsoc.org/) and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
