Dr Masao Sakauchi was appointed as the President of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan in April 2013. As the President of NICT, Dr. Sakauchi strives to create new value in the field of Information and Communications Technology that will ultimately unite the cyber world with the physical world we live in. Dr. Sakauchi's major research area is multimedia data processing techniques for images and videos, especially the cutting edge research in object recognition. He has even developed a system that automatically detects traffic accidents from surveillance camera images. Not only has his research had an impact within academia but, he has also succeeded in providing us with research that is highly practical and directly beneficial to society. Furthermore, he has contributed to the development efforts of Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Science Information Network. Dr. Sakauchi's professional career started as a Full-time Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1975. He joined the University of California, USA as a Researcher in 1987. He was appointed to Director General of the Institute of Industrial Science at the University of Tokyo in 1998. In 2002 he joined the National Institute of Informatics and was appointed to Director General in 2005. Dr. Sakauchi holds a Ph.D in Electronics Engineering and is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He has also been awarded the Ericsson Telecommunication Award (2010) and the National Order of the Legion of Honour (Chevalier, awarded by the French Republic, 2012).
