Jean-Pierre Bienaime has been Chairman of mobile industry association The UMTS Forum since January 2003, with a mission to promote a common vision of the development of 3G UMTS and of its Long Term Evolution 4G LTE, and to ensure their worldwide commercial success. The UMTS Forum notably contributes to international organizations (ITU, EC, ETSI, 3GPP, CEPT), conducts studies and reports on key focus areas of mobile broadband communications, and holds a continued dialogue with decision-makers and regulators of key growth markets worldwide. Since its creation in 1996 the UMTS Forum has sustained an uninterrupted role in identifying and securing harmonized radio spectrum for mobile broadband networks, notably through continued contributions to ITU work groups. The Forum was a major contributor for obtaining the 2.6 GHz IMT-2000 extension spectrum band at WARC-2000, now allocated for 4G LTE, and was instrumental in obtaining Digital Dividend and C-band spectrum for mobile at WRC-07. UMTS Forum traffic and spectrum forecasts were also accepted by ITU-R at WRC-07 and were integrated, with updated traffic report, as an official contribution to WRC-12. In 2011 the Forum published “Two worlds connected: consumer electronics meets mobile broadband”, which was one of the first key reports in the industry dedicated to internet of things.
