A NEW MANDATE FOR ITU ON CLIMATE CHANGE


ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 approves Resolution 182

PP-10

 

Adopting Resolution 182, “Information and communication technologies, climate change and the protection of the environment.”, the 2010Plenipotentiary Conference reinforced ITU’s mandate  regarding its activities on climate change This new resolution instructs ITU to continue applying ICTs to address the causes and effects of climate change, strengthen the collaboration with other organizations working in the field as well as encourages the Union to raise public and policymaker awareness of the critical role of ICTs in addressing climate change.

5th ITU SYMPOSIUM ON ICTS, THE ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE


Cairo Symposium presents a new roadmap to enhance environmental sustainability through use of ICTs


Building on the tradition of ITU symposia, the 5th ITU  Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change was held in Cairo, Egypt in November 2010. The key outcome of the symposium was the approval of “the Cairo Roadmap”, a set of recommendations for action  related to ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change.

The Cairo Roadmap is a unique starting point  for governments, in particular of the African and Arab regions, to promote the use of ICTs for the protection of the environment and develop relevant green national policies.” (Hamadoun Toure, ITU Secretary-General)

"Overview and general principles of methodologies for assessing the environmental impact of ICT
". This Recommendation presents general principles on how to assess the environmental impact of ICTs and provides specific examples of opportunities to reduce the environmental load through the use of ICTs.
