| On the weekend
of 16 and 17 October 1999 a special event, known as the World Telecom Internet Days, will
close the TELECOM 99 + INTERACTIVE 99 event. It will act as
the bridge that leads from the industrial age to the information age, and will be open to
the general public as well as to TELECOMs principal audience of
exhibitors, Forum delegates, media representatives and trade visitors. The two-day event will explore the promises of the
information age by presenting a mix of artistic performances, debates, visionary speeches,
and technical demonstrations of services and applications. It will be divided into six
sessions, each one centred on a key aspect of modern society,as follows:
1. The individual. How has our
perception of ourselves and our relationship to others changed over time and how does this
evolution fit in with the advent of the Internet and virtual reality? Issues include
health and healthiness, our attitude to privacy, our feelings of space, time, movement and
our bodies as well as our needs and desires.
2. Trade and commerce. The nature
of the client has changed moving from a buyer to a consumer if not to the user or even the
community member. How have consumer requirements modified over the years and how have
these modifications been effected by the advent of plastic money and online commerce? How
have commodity markets and other intermediary trading modified over the years and how has
the arrival of the Internet contributed to those changes ?
3. Mobility and communications.
Our notion of the world has radically changed over the last decades. The term
"globalisation" is very recent. How has our relationship to the world at large
changed ? And at the same time what has happened to our relatonship to the local
community? How have mobile communications and the Internet contributed to these changes ?
What impact have they had on cultural diversity ?
4. Knowledge and work. How has our
perception of work changed and what role have information technologies played in these
changes? How has our use of knowledge changed and how have learning methods adapted to
these changes? What has become the role of knowedge and learning in work? How have
these technologies contributed to the changing nature of learning?
5. The community. How does the
advent of online communities and widespread use of email fit in with our changing attitude
to the family, the local community and to those we work with? Has the notion of solidarity
within the community changed? To what extent have these technologies contributed to
exclusion and violence?
6. Democracy and governance. A
number of major events have modified our conception of government over the last half
century. How has our perception of democracy changed and what impact have the media and,
in particular, the Internet had on democracy? What has become of the public sphere?
