ITU plays a vital role in the management of the radio-frequency
spectrum, a finite natural resource which is increasingly in
demand due to the rapid development of new radio-based services
and the enormous popularity of mobile communications
technologies.
The involvement of the International Telecommunication Union
in issues relating to spectrum is listed as follows:
ITU-R activities related to spectrum
The
ITU Radiocommunication
Sector's website provides a good overview of its activities.
Study Group 1 (SG1) of the ITU-R develops principles and
techniques for effective spectrum management and monitoring,
spectrum sharing criteria and methods, long-term strategies for
spectrum utilization and approaches to national spectrum
management.
SG1 has updated the
ITU Handbook of National Spectrum Management, which
describes spectrum management fundamentals, either from a
technical or from an economical point of view. The current
version (2005 edition) is available for purchase
here.
The
World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-07) will be held
from 15 October to 9 November 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The
Regional Radiocommunications Conference (RRC-06) is being
held from 15 May to 16 July 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The
World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-03) was held from
9 June to 4 July 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Final Acts,
recording the decisions taken at this conference, are available
