New ITU TELECOM Board of Directors sets strategic course

Industry leaders focus on meeting needs of fast-changing ICT industry at ITU TELECOM

Geneva, 23 May 2007 — A brand new ITU TELECOM Board of Directors, comprising top-level representatives from major global ICT corporations and organizations, met recently in Geneva to map out the future course for ITU TELECOM. The Board proposed a set of innovations for ITU TELECOM, aimed at cementing its position as a global networking platform, including high-level business meetings, stand-alone Forums, expanded Exhibition space, plus a new schedule of TELECOM events for 2007−2009. ITU TELECOM will also forge partnerships with professional trade show organizers and outsource several event activities to ensure its financial viability.

ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun Touré welcomed members of the ITU TELECOM Board to Geneva and outlined his vision of ITU’s future. The Board discussed the new strategic direction of ITU TELECOM and its Global and Regional events and initiatives. To communicate and validate the new business model and directions for TELECOM, Dr Touré announced that he will embark on a mission to meet senior industry leaders, policy makers and regulators around the world to determine their needs and cater to the growth dynamics of the telecommunication and ICT sector.

According to the Secretary-General, ITU TELECOM will reflect the vision of the Union and its membership and contribute to connecting the remotest regions of the world, ensuring that everyone has access to the benefits of ICT. "Telecommunications and ICT have the capacity to empower the world’s inhabitants to attain their aspirations," Dr Hamadoun Touré said. "We have to mobilize this vast scientific and technological potential to connect all cities and villages and fast-track the 2015 UN Millennium Development Goals aimed at substantially reducing poverty within the next eight years." He added, "Our immediate strategy is to concentrate on a regional basis starting with Africa and moving on to Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pacific islands, Asia and Europe as part of ITU’s ambitious programme to connect the world. ITU TELECOM is very well positioned to bring global human, financial and technical resources to bear on achieving these goals for everyone."

"ITU TELECOM is a unique networking platform where the most innovative minds in the global field of information and communication technologies connect; it represents a remarkable opportunity not only to generate growth in the sector but also to help close the digital divide and create digital opportunities around the world," Chairman of the Board, Mr Reza Jafari said. "We aim to breathe new life into TELECOM and include elements that will tailor the events and initiatives to the current expectations and future direction of the ICT industry. At the same time, it will reflect the synergies and resourcefulness of ITU that is the leading intergovernmental organization dealing with ICT."

Qatar Telecom (Q-Tel) Chairman Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohamed bin Saud Al-Thani expressed his support for ITU TELECOM and expected positive results from the re-structuring. "I am pleased to serve as Member of the ITU TELECOM Board and along with my colleagues we will do our best to achieve the initiatives and targets set by the Board. TELECOM will emerge strengthened by positioning its brand in line with global realities of the resurgent ICT and telecommunication sector.
