ITU TELECOM world and regional events represent a key element of ITU's development mandate, providing vital knowledge transfer and exchange of ideas between telecoms professionals across all world regions.
Initially conceived as a service to ITU members, the first ITU TELECOM in 1971 combined an exhibition of latest, best-in-class equipment with a forum designed to help participants anticipate industry trends. More than 35 years on, that winning recipe has seen ITU TELECOM notch up an unrivalled track record in bringing together top representatives from government, private industry and the investment and regulatory communities.
To better serve the needs of ITU members in developing economies, ITU TELECOM was expanded in 1985 to include specially focused regional events. Since that date, regional Telecoms have been held in a regular cycle in Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Americas.
The next world event, ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 returns to Geneva, Switzerland this October. Previous ITU TELECOM WORLD events have been held in Geneva in 1971, 1975, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2003. ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 took place in Hong Kong, China.
