ITU Conference signals enhanced international cooperation in ICT
- Plenipotentiary Conference endorses expanded mandate for ITU
The 17th ITU Plenipotentiary
Conference wound up Friday evening by setting out a road map for
the Union to chart its future course as the pre-eminent world
body for telecommunications and state-of-the-art information and
communication technologies (ICT). It endorsed ITU’s essential
role in Bridging the Digital Divide and ensuring the continued
expansion of global communication networks. The Conference

Plenipotentiary Conference Elects ITU Bureau Directors
Mr Sami Al-Basheer of Saudi Arabia and Mr Malcolm Johnson of the
United Kingdom were elected today as Directors of the
Telecommunication Development Bureau and Telecommunication
Standardization Bureau respectively in a third round of voting.
Mr Valery Timofeev of Russia was re-elected for a second term

ITU Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General elected today by
Plenipotentiary Conference - Landslide majority obtained
Member States of the International Telecommunication Union
elected Mr Hamadoun I. Touré of Mali as Secretary-General of ITU
for a four-year term. The election took place in Antalya, Turkey
during the 17th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference. Mr Touré won the
position with 95 votes with 155 countries present and voting,
and thus the required majority for election was 78 votes... [read

The 17th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference opens Monday at the Vega
Convention Centre in Antalya, Turkey. The event, which will run
