Recommendations adopted by Study Group 15 in October 2001
ITU-T Recommendations G.872, G.709, and G.959.1 — the first set of standards in the Optical Transport Network (OTN) series approved in 1999 and early this year — addressed the OTN architecture, interface frame format, and physical layer interfaces, respectively.

Recommendations agreed at the last meeting of Study Group 15 include:

  • Revised ITU-T Recommendation G.872, "Architecture of Optical Transport Networks". This revision includes (among other features), the ability to do Time Division Multiplexing of signals carried on the OTN.

  • An amendment to Recommendation G.709, "Interfaces for Optical Transport Networks" to describe the mappings for TDM multiplexed signals in the OTN, as well as extensions to allow even higher bit-rate signals to be carried using virtual concatenation.

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.798 'Characteristics of Optical Transport Network (OTN) Hierarchy Equipment functional Blocks' specifies the characteristics of Optical Transport Network Equipment, including supervision, information flow, processes, and functions to be performed by this equipment.

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.8251 'The Control of Jitter and Wander within the Optical Transport Network (OTN)' includes the network limits for Jitter and Wander, as well as Jitter and Wander tolerances required of equipment for Optical Transport Networks. (These parameters relate to the variability of the bit rate of signals carried over the optical transport network.)

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.7041/Y.1303 'Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)' specifies interface mapping and equipment functions for carrying packet oriented payloads including IP/PPP, Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and ESCON (Enterprise Systems Connection) payloads over Optical and other transport networks. This Recommendation, together with ITU-T Recommendation G.709 on Interfaces for Optical Transport Networks approved earlier this year provide the full set of mappings necessary to carry IP traffic over DWDM systems.

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.7710/Y.1701 'Common Equipment Management Function Requirements' is a generic equipment management Recommendation, and was derived from knowledge gained through the development of SONET and SDH equipment management Recommendations. This new Recommendation provides the basis for management of equipment for new transport network technologies including the optical transport network.

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.874, 'Management Aspects of the Optical Transport Network Element' specifies applications, functions, and requirements for managing optical networking equipment utilizing operations support systems (OSS). It covers the areas of configuration management, fault management, and performance management for client optical network elements.

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.874.1 'Optical Transport Network (OTN) Protocol-Neutral Management Information Model for the Network Element View' provides a means to ensure consistency among the models for OTN equipment for specific management protocols, including CMISE (Common Management Information Service Element), CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture), and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).

  • New ITU-T Recommendation G.7712/Y.1703 'Architecture and Specification of Data Communication Network' extends capabilities originally built for Telecommunications Management Networks (TMN). It allows the use of IP protocols as well as OSI protocols, and supports new services such as Automatic Switched Transport Networks (ASTN) through communication among the transport plane, the control plane, and the management plane.
