Information about the project
Promoting connected communities through 350 free WIFI Hotspots and 100 Public Internet Access Points in Mauritius
Wi-Fi and PIAP
To reduce the digital divide and promote connected communities, 350 Wi-Fi hotspots with free 10 MB Internet connection through Optical Fibre, have been set up in public places across Mauritius. An additional 250 locations have been earmarked to be equipped with free Wi-Fi access in the near future. While the Wi-Fi access is being promoted by bringing one’s own device, the needs of people who do not possess a smart phone or a laptop have also been catered for by the availability of 100 Public Internet Access Points (PIAPs) across Mauritius and Rodrigues. The projects are oriented towards providing universal access to ICT to all segments of the population. The PIAPs have been set up in almost all the Post Offices around the island. PIAPs besides providing ICT and Internet facilities also provide assistance to the public to use such facility through the support of at least one IT Assistant in each PIAP.
National implementation: Mauritius
Ongoing from 27/02/2015 to 29/06/2018
