Arab City ICT Strategy (CICTS)
It is in cities that people gather to achieve rapid and harmonious material and cultural development, and efficient and effective use of natural, special, intellectual, and technological resources. It is in cities that civilizations integrate and evolve. While addressing challenges and problems in the process of development, cities maintaining their glamour and keep improving, and Arab cities are not an exception of that. Those challenges and problems are facing cities’ inhabitants on daily basis, forming a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from environmental, infrastructural, traffic congestion, solid waste disposal, delivery of services, etc. However, since the inception of the ICT, world governments and municipal leaders are hoping the new technology could help them overcome such challenges and problems in the future, through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). The MENA region’s representation among these cities does not commensurate with the region’s size and income level. An important part of the reason for this lies in the fact that no regional champion and resource-center sensitized to the region’s issue has emerged. AUDI, as the region’s pre-eminent organization for urban decision-makers, can play this role as it mobilizes its resources and those of its partners to assist its membership in learning about the undertaking CICTS. The overall thrust of the ICT Strategy is to raise awareness, stimulate demand for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and promote the City as a location that embraces ICT in its widest sense in order to help with sustainable development for the cities and assist in achieving the objectives of the WSIS and Millennium Development Goals. The benefits of such strategies would be reflected in everything that takes place throughout business, social, community, education and local government.
