IoT Makers Creation 2019

Collaboration in Hands on Workshops, Competition, Exhibition, Business matching, Incubation

Description

The government is currently present not only as a regulator but also as a facilitator in a IoT Makers Creation, a series of collaboration events in the form of hands on workshops, competition, exhibition, business matching, and incubation.

After enabling the ecosystem with necessary regulation, government takes the role as voorijder to boost ecosystem. Indonesia is now in early state of the development of IoT thus government action is properly needed in order to make IoT reaches its economic of scale. By this project, we expect that we can have many IoT solutions created by makers and community. The solutions will have local characters as well as specific to overcome many problems in Indonesia. Thus, with many solutions are available, the supply is enough to reach economic of scale as well as with local solutions, the demand also reaches economic of scale as the user can feel significant impact from the implementation of IoT.

This series of events will not succeed without vigorous collaboration between Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Association of Internet of Things Indonesia, Ministry of Industry, telecommunication industries, and so on. From the best of our knowledge, this project is one of the biggest collaboration projects in ICT sector with the involvement of every stakeholder is high. Throughout 2019, there have been hands on workshops with around 250 teams of IoT makers & developers in ten cities in Indonesia. 100 IoT solutions have been collected to join the competition. We chose the top 10 IoT solutions with local character and have specificity in Indonesia to be showed in exhibition. The exhibition gave broad exposure to the makers as well as gave solid evidence to the society that we already have solutions which are applicable to solve their problem. After that, we create business matching event to give the selected makers opportunities to present their project to related State Owned Enterprises. We also incubate the proper solutions in various incubator, e.g. IoT Labs.

Replicability

We strongly believe that the project is replicable for some reasons:
- it has strong cause. the project is intended to create local and specific IoT solutions so the implementation of IoT will significantly boosted. The ending of IoT surely is improvement quality of life as well as economic growth.

- it is not complicated. Government takes the role as the hub and mastermind thus we do not do all things. Government organizes the meetings and supports necessary funding, some human resources (less than 10 Government officials who handle this project), publication, and endorsement. The speakers of workshop comes from industry; the modul kit and other funding sponsored by industry; the venue is provided by local government or coworking space; the exhibition handled by association; the incubation handled by incubator (IoT Labs); the jury of competition comes from government, industry, and association.

- it does not require high budget. The publication are online through the website and spread out to various whatsapp groups. The event is not expensive to organize because using coworking space or local government's hall with the speakers come from the industry itself. The exhibition is held together with another ICT exhibition. The incubation is handled by incubator.

- it has strong demand from stakeholders. The telco companies as the sponsor are satisfied because more solutions are created means more potential revenue to their business. The association is happy because the ecosystem is growing. Another government bodies are pleased because it also helps their job and function. The IoT industries as the sponsor are happy because their product is used. The State Owned Enterprises are satisfied because they can have better solution for their business. The makers, community, and academia are also happy. To participate, only have to submit applications online. If selected, just bring tools and portable computer. The event is free of charge. We give IoT modul kit so they can create innovative and creative solution.

Sustainability

The project is sustainable because:

- even if the Government does not lead this project, another stakeholders can carry on this project because of its incomplexity and low budget.

- it has strong demand from stakeholders. All stakeholders are happy with this projects and willingly to contribute more next year.

- it can give birth to new startups/ industry/ enterprises because the series of events tackles many challenge to create enterprise. The series of events consists of workshop to create solutions, competition of solutions, exhibition of solutions, business matching to get users and clients, incubation to step up the startups.

WSIS values promotion

How this project promotes many WSIS values in our community: - Collaboration to promote IoT ecosystem. All stakeholders are giving their effort for the development of ICTs - Maintain the sustainability of telecommunication infrastructure with new revenue from IoT. It is related to the Information and communication infrastructure principal - Everyone can register to the hands on workshop. This could promote access to information and knowledge - The hands on workshop is also the form of capacity building - This project promote the implementation of IoT across all sectors. It is related to the enabling environment - This project leads to the economic of scale of IoT. This IoT applications are ICT applications and will give benefits in all aspects of life - the main purpose of this project is to grow local and specific IoT solutions that could solve specific problem in Indonesia.
