Mobile networks are often the most widespread and reliable infrastructure in emerging markets where large sections of the population are frequently underserved by basic services, whilst mobile phones provide a universal communications tool capable of delivering almost any kind of digital service. Encouraging large-scale expansion in mobile communications use to address inclusiveness and stimulate socio-economic development is therefore the aim of the m-Powering Initiative. It does so by identifying new types of partnerships and funding models needed to build impactful win-win solutions to improve access to education, healthcare, agricultural, financial and governmental services at affordable prices. The 2018 m-Powering Initiative report provides stakeholders with a common framework to leverage the potential of mobile technologies to build sustainable development models and achieve the SDGs in today’s fast-changing digital environment. This session will focus on how the m-Powering Initiative can make a difference through impactful strategies and frameworks for increasing access and affordability, advocacy and partnerships to empower people using mobile technologies.
During the session ITU-D will release the 2018 m-Powering report, which sets out the great promise of mobile technologies by fostering leadership engagement and outreach, cross-sectoral collaboration, and access to financial capital through partnerships, contributing to the successful implementation of the SDGs
