Adopting digital identification for development
Wednesday, September 12, 2018, 3:45 PM - 5:00 PM, Room 12 ABE
The use of digital technologies for identification and authentication is opening up new opportunities for solving a fundamental challenge for many of the SDGs: the ability to securely and accurately identify individuals. Doing so will facilitate the accurate delivery of economic and social rights and services such as vaccinations, distribution of government subsidies, financial payments, and access to education. The potential of digital identification is widely recognized, but the implementation and adoption of concrete initiatives present challenges in terms of the complexity of the ecosystem required, the need to ensure robust data protection and security, and the need to interoperate with existing services, systems and other identification schemes. What are current bestpractices in adopting and scaling up digital identification initiatives for foundational and functional identity? What results havebeen achieved? How are new technologies such as AI and blockchain being used for digital identification tools? How can countries implement and adopt a “Digital Identity Implementation Roadmap”?
