His Excellency Dr István Mikola has been serving as Minister of State for Security Policy and International Cooperation since 2014 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary. In his capacity as Minister of State he oversees a broad portfolio spanning from security policy through international organizations to humanitarian and international development affairs. Prior to his appointment as Minister of State, Dr Mikola was the Permanent Representative of Hungary to the OECD between 2011 and 2014.
Dr Mikola himself is a senior professional in numerous fields of expertise and has been actively involved in practice, managementand research. As a physician, he has specialized in internal medicine, infectology and epidemiology. He has held several managementpositions, including General Director at Magyar Imre Hospital and Szent László Hospital, President of the Hungarian Hospital Association, Vice-President of the International Hospital Federation, Head of the Epidemiological Department of the Hungarian Public Health Service and CEO at the Hungarian National Blood Service.
He served as Ministerial Commissioner responsible for the social security system and later as Minister of Health between 2001 and 2002. He was a Member of the Hungarian Parliament between 2006 and 2011, where he chaired the Committee on Health Affairs in 2010-2011.
